I think we need to challenge the view of this first cartoon. There has been little bickering. There has been an array of attempts on the left to get America healthy, employed and safe from nuclear war--all overmodulated, in the opinions of many of us, but attempts nevertheless. And the modulation has come from an overweaning desire to "collaborate" with the right.
The right, on the other hand, spends its energy imagining secret agendas on our part, puffing itself up with the heady freedom to block legislation, targeting people it doesn't like, and otherwise acting like newly-minted adolescents who are mad at their parents.
"Bickering" implies some kind of equivalent responsibility, and giving it credence is like giving credence to the idea that global warming has evenly-divided scientific proponents. I believe we need to start calling out bad behavior when we see it, and get over our liberal generosity in taking blame. That's a kind of political codependence we'd be better off without, even though it does make us feel "nice".

Kathy, I was confused about your post until I realized that by the term "left", you were referring to the Democrats or liberals (the donkey in the cartoon you were commenting on).
Let's all get clear on something: with rare and very effectively marginalized exceptions such as Kucinich, the Dems are not the "left" except in a relative sense as compared to the more right-wing GOP. Even calling them moderate is probably too kind; they're near right as compared to the GOP's far right, and the bickering in the halls of Washington, when it's not just for show, is usually just a disagreement between near-right and far-right factions about how best to rape the planet most profitably. Some of the so-called Western democracies and left-leaning South American administrations actually have representation at the national level by parties that could be called "left", even if only as part of a coalition government, such as real labor parties or even the Green Party, but the good ol' USA has essentially no effective leftist representation at the Federal level, certainly not in Congress or the White House. Probably none at the state level, either. If you're confusing the slightly "kinder and gentler" planet-raping imperialists known as the Democratic party with leftists, well, that just shows how thoroughly the government has been able to control us by controlling the terms of discourse. The Democratic party is not "left" in any meaningful sense, and liberals are not progressives. I know it's depressing to realize this, but I've gotta assume that the sweet nepenthe of hoping that the Federal government has any significant Left influence will do us more harm than good in the long run.
